Description:

Wampum belt ca. 1770 unknown tribal affiliation. Collected by Sir John Caldwell when an ensign at Fort Niagara or adjutant at Fort Detroit between 1774 and 1776.

Secured ends with extra row of wefts.

Purchased from arthur Speyer Jr in 1973, acquired by him from Caldwell's descendants in 1960, received by Sir John Caldwell during his military service in North America between 1780 and 1784.

Left end of the belt starts with 15 rows and decreases to 13 at 34 columns in from the left. The beads used in this section are doffenent lengths to accomplish the mergiinf of rows.
